Maoists, Leninists, the military, civilian self-defense committees – hardly any other politically motivated mass murder involved so many different actors as the armed conflicts in Peru. The scholarly literature on the subject reflects this diversity. Some authors argue that the usual breakdown into perpetrators and victims does not apply in Peru.
